How to Elope on a Boat in Florida
Planning a Florida boat elopement can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. But fear not, because I’ve got you covered. With a little bit of planning, you’ll be able to pull off the perfect boat elopement in no time.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to plan the most epic elopement:
Pick your location: Decide where you want to go. The entire state is surrounded by water and all the sunrises and sunsets are epic. Look for locations that offer great land amenities for after your boat elopement. Some of my favorite locations? South Florida, the Florida Keys, or the Treasure Coast.
Choose your date: Florida’s weather is beautiful, but also wild. It’s recommended to avoid hurricane season (June through November). Read more about when to elope in Florida and if avoiding hurricane season isn’t an option, read more about how to plan an elopement during hurricane season so you’re prepared.
Decide who’s coming: Some boats are cozy for two, others fit a lot more. Since boat capacity is very strict in Florida, it’s important to determine the number of guests you want to invite (if any) and ensure the boat can accommodate everyone.
Book your charter: Research charters in the area and compare their offerings and customer reviews. Choose a boat that matches your vibe and group size.
Select the type of boat: Choose the type of boat that best fits your needs and preferences, based on factors like size, amenities, and style.
Plan your elopement day: What types of activities will you want to do? What will you eat? Do you want to get into the water? What do you want it to feel like? Chill? Wild? Tropical? Design the day around that.
Hire a Florida elopement photographer: There’s a huge difference between a photographer that specializes in Florida boat elopements and one that offers elopements. It’s important to find someone that is used to boat elopements so they can help navigate the day! Need a recommendation? I might be a little bias 😉
Pack your gear – Bringing the right things is huge for making sure you’re going to have an epic (and fully prepared) day. I’ve included a full checklist of things to bring below, but you can also read more about my water elopement essentials!
Before you set sail on the open water, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. Luckily, I’m here to break it down for you! So, let’s dive into the good, the bad, and the seaworthy of a boat elopement!
Pros
Private + intimate: No crowds, no pressure — just you two (and maybe your dog).
Scenic: Water views, colorful sunrises and sunsets, dolphins and manatees if we’re lucky.
Flexible timing: Ceremony at sunrise? Drinks at sunset? You call the shots.
Budget-friendly: Less guests = less cost.
Built-in adventure: You’re not just getting married — you’re making memories.
Cons
Weather dependent: You’ll need a backup plan if the skies and seas don’t cooperate.
Guest list limited: Most boats hold 6 guests max, but you can find larger boats for bigger groups.
Motion sickness: If waves aren’t your thing, let’s stick to calmer routes.
Logistics: Figuring out when you need to be and where based on the water routes and sunrise/set times.
Not sure what kind of boat fits your dream day? Here’s a quick breakdown:
Yacht – These are luxurious boats with high-end amenities, perfect for a more upscale and lavish elopement.
Catamaran – These boats offer a stable and spacious platform for an elopement, with plenty of room for guests and activities.
Sailboat – For a more classic and romantic experience, a sailboat can provide a unique and peaceful setting for an elopement.
Motorboat – If you’re looking for speed and adventure, a motorboat can provide an exhilarating experience for your elopement. This type of boat offers flexibility for island hopping and getting into the water.
Houseboat – For a more laid-back and intimate elopement, a houseboat can provide a cozy and comfortable setting for the couple and a few guests.
Hot tip: Always go with a licensed captain or charter — it keeps the stress off you and ensures everything’s safe and smooth.
Getting married is step one to an epic boat elopement, but it doesn’t end there. Your boat elopement can be as wild or as tame as you want it to be. You can read my full list of fun things to do during your Florida elopement, but here’s some of my favorite for the boat:
Before you set sail, it’s important to pack your bags with all the essentials. Here’s a list of must-haves if you’re eloping on a boat:
Reef-safe sunscreen
Sea sickness medicine
Hats
Sunglasses
Bathing suits
Towels
Warm clothing (even if it’s warm during the day, it can get chilly on the water, especially at night. Bring a jacket, sweater, or other warm clothing to stay comfortable)
Change of clothes and shoes in case you get wet
Snacks and drinks
Personal items such as medication, toiletries, or other necessities.
A waterproof bag to keep your belongings safe and dry
