How do I choose the right elopement dress for my location?

Think about the terrain, weather, and vibe of your elopement spot. Flowy, lightweight fabrics work great for beach or tropical elopements (like here in Florida!), while fitted or layered styles might be better for cooler climates. The goal: feel like yourself and be able to move comfortably. Make sure you can sit, stand, dance, etc. in your dress for the ultimate comfort.

Can I wear a traditional wedding dress for an elopement?

Totally! There are no rules. If you’ve fallen in love with a traditional gown or detailed lace train, go for it. Just keep in mind logistics like how easy it is to travel with or move around in—especially if you’re hiking, boating, or doing anything outdoors.

Do I need to wear a traditional gown?

Nope—not unless you want to. If you want to do something laid back and casual, you should 100% do that! At the end of the day, your elopement dress should feel like you, whether it’s a full-on ballgown or something short and simple.

What’s the best fabric for an elopement dress?

Lightweight fabrics like chiffon, silk, tulle, or lace are ideal. They’re breathable, photograph beautifully in natural light, and won’t weigh you down. Bonus: they pack easier and wrinkle less than heavier materials. If you are traveling with your dress, make sure to bring a steamer or ask the dress boutique how they recommend to travel with the dress and how to remove wrinkles once you arrive.

What should I know about alterations?

Definitely budget for alterations—it can make a huge difference in how your dress fits and feels. Plan for 2–3 months before your elopement for alterations, and don’t forget to ask your tailor about adding a bustle if your dress has a train. It makes walking around way easier for adventure elopements.

What if I want to jump into the pool or ocean with my dress? Will it get ruined?

Honestly? It might—but if you’re into it, do it anyway. All of my brides that have jumped into pools or gone into the water have LOVED how the photos turned out (and their dresses were fine afterwards). Lightweight dresses (like chiffon, tulle, or lace) usually hold up best for water moments. Just be prepared that it could stain, stretch, wrinkle or get weighed down. Bring a second outfit or backup plan if you’re worried about preserving the dress. It’s also a good time to mention not to jump into deep waters with a heavy fabric dress if you’re not a strong swimmer!

How far in advance should I buy my elopement dress?

If you’re ordering from a boutique or designer, aim for 6–9 months in advance to allow time for production and alterations. Shopping ready-to-wear online? You can often find something amazing within 1–3 months or even quicker if you’re on a tight timeline. Some boutiques will sell you samples dresses that you can walk out with (that’s what I did!).
