If you’re here, you might already have your heart set on eloping in St. Augustine. But as an elopement photographer that’s helped so many couples plan their elopement here in this historic city, I wanted to share a few reasons that you might not have considered.
St. Augustine is FULL of history. At every turn, you’re surrounded by historic landmarks and architecture. It’s one of those unique qualities about this Florida town. But even with the centuries of history, this place still has all the modern conveniences and excitement you’d love to include on your elopement day. There’s so many different opportunities for adventure, activities, and fun stops throughout the city. From bottling your own bourbon at a local distillery to trying TONS of locally made treats to walking the steps of a 350 year old Spanish fort, there’s no shortage of adventure in Florida’s oldest city.

When it comes to making things legal, eloping in St. Augustine is seriously easy! The state of Florida has all the same marriage requirements regardless of the county, but I’ve included St. Augustine-specific information to make this process seamless for you.
Before you can get married, you’ll need to apply in person for a marriage license through the St. John’s County Clerk of Court. This Clerk of Court does not have an online application like some of the other counties. However, you’re welcome to apply at any Florida county Clerk of Court and get married in St. Augustine. If you’re not a Florida resident, you can apply and get married the same day as there’s no waiting period. However, if you’re a Florida resident, there’s a 3-day waiting period after you apply unless you’ve taken a pre-maritial course.
Before you go to the Clerk of Court, make sure you both have a legal form of identification (driver’s license, passport, or state ID), social security numbers, dates of any past marriages, and form of payment.
Now that you’ve got your marriage license, you’ll need someone to legally marry you! This can be an ordained officiant (minister, priest, rabbi, etc.), Florida judge, or Florida notary. There’s also a spot on your marriage license for two witnesses; however, this is optional in the state of Florida. If you’d like to learn more about marriage requirements in the state of Florida, read through my how to elope in Florida guide!
Once you have your marriage license, you’re ready to elope in St. Augustine! No matter if you’re looking for historic architecture, gardens, or beaches, there’s a perfect spot for you in this city.

The Lightner Museum is one of St. Augustine’s most iconic elopement locations! This venue features historic architecture, tall palm trees, and a reflection pond all centrally located in a quaint courtyard.
This location does require advanced reservations, but you can read about the process in my how to elope at the Lightner Museum guide!
Example Elopement: Stephanie + Matthew
Castle Otttis is one of those locations you just have to see to believe it’s real. This privately owned venue is steps from Vilano Beach and offers all the privacy you could want for your elopement day. Castle Otttis features historic architecture, original pews for a few guests, and panoramic views of the ocean from the rooftop.
This location does require advanced reservations, but you can read about the process in my how to elope at Castle Otttis guide!

Washington Oaks Garden State Park is one of Florida’s most unique state parks. With river and beach access, this uniquely situation garden is lined with old Florida oak trees and tons of florals and foliage. Across A1A, you’ll find a secluded beach with rock formations that make it perfect for your vows or portraits.
This location does require a wedding or photography permit!
Example Elopement: Sammie + Clint
Now hear me out…if you want to a have a lowkey elopement day without the fuss of worrying about reservations or permits, St. George Street might be the perfect fit! If you’re okay with people being around during vows, St. George Street offers tons of great spots for your ceremony. With tons of historic architecture, you’ll find a location along this stretch that feels just right. Plus, since you’re centrally located in downtown, you’ll be ready for your next adventure!

The lighthouse is a great option for your elopement ceremony if you’re wanting a semi-private and unique backdrop. This location has a little ceremony spot at the base of the lighthouse that is great for inviting a few guests. Walking to the top of the lighthouse after your vows offers great photo opportunities and you’ll end with a bird’s eye view of St. Augustine! Keep in mind that you cannot elope at the top of the lighthouse for safety reasons.
The lighthouse does not require a permit; however, I would double check with site management as this can change at any time.
Example Elopement: Rocio + German
This national park is filled with tons of history dating over 450 years when the Spanish came to Florida. The Castillo De San Marcos is a historic fort that offers castle vibes with views of the river.
This location does require a special event permit for weddings happening on-site; however, you’re welcome to take photos (no ceremony) within the fort without a permit.
Example Elopement: Rocio + German

Anastasia State Park is a great option for couples wanting expansive shoreline for their elopement ceremony! This location has great amenities like close bathroom, small beach shop, and handicap walkways on the beach. It’s also the closest beach to downtown St. Augustine just over the Bridge of Lions.
This location does require a wedding reservation and permit through the park service.
Example Elopement: Jessica + Gary
Crescent Beach is another great option for couples wanting expansive shoreline for their elopement ceremony! This location doesn’t have as many amenities as Anastasia State Park, but there is no permit required to elope here. It’s a bit further from downtown St. Augustine.
Example Elopement: Natalie + Shawn

While Florida has mild temperatures all year long, there are a few months that are best to elope in St. Augustine! As a Florida native, I highly recommend anywhere between late November and April. This is just after hurricane season where the temperatures and humidity are lower and there are way less bugs! Keep in mind that if you opt for a winter date, there’s a chance that it could be colder (think low 40s) during the day. As long as you’re prepared for that chance, it’s really an ideal time!
Timing Considerations:
There’s a HUGE misconception that eloping in St. Augustine means a quick ceremony and a few photos.
